Kazakh Consortium to Produce Energy-Saving, Eco-Friendly Lightbulbs

ASTANA – The SuluNur Kazakhstan scientific-technological consortium has begun production of energy-saving light-emitting diode (LED) bulbs, which are as effective as 250-watt glow bulbs, but require only 40 watts of electricity, according to a report by Tengrinews.

LED bulbs break down if temperatures rise above 60 degrees Celsius. Kazakh scientists, however, have invented thermal stabilisation technology to decrease lighting heat. This patented technology increases bulb life to between 36,000 and 75,000 hours, which is 50 times more than glow lamps and 4-16 times more than luminous tube lamps. As a result, the lamps developed by Kazakh scientists are less expensive and better for the environment than traditional tube bulbs, which contain mercury.

SuluNur LED lamps are used by state-owned companies in Kazakhstan as well as in such notable buildings in Astana and Almaty as the Akorda presidential residence, AFD Plaza, Sharkhristan and Esentai Mall and the Baiterek Tower.

The energy-saving technology created by the consortium is also used internationally. The lamps were recognised as an innovative product in at the “EBA Achievements” award ceremony held by the Oxford Academic Union in London. Participation in the event enabled the consortium to use the brand and brand marks of the Quality Standard of European Business Assembly (EBA). SuluNur was also awarded by EBA and International Socrates Committee in Austria in 2014, allowing the consortium to use the brand of the best producer in Great Britain and Northern Ireland up to 2020.

Representatives of the scientific-technological consortium, however, note that expensive, foreign LED bulbs are still purchased in Kazakhstan instead of the more eco-friendly domestically produced bulbs. The company offers all state companies the opportunity to upgrade their lighting systems.

LED bulbs are the most effective bulbs in the world, offering a compact size, efficiency, durability, the possibility to change spectral-response characteristics without colour-filters, safety, durability, an almost full absence of ultraviolet and irradiation and infrared emission.
